Practice Expectations
Daily practice makes a significant difference in a student’s musical progress. Practice expectations in the Merrell Piano Music Studio are:
Weekly assignment sheets will detail specific sections of music and how many times it should be practiced daily while focusing on specific goals. I will discuss an approximate time amount with students, but we focus on accomplishing the assignment and meeting the goals set at each lesson. Students will be able to check off what they have practiced each day on their weekly assignment sheet. (It is rarely to play a piece straight through!)
- Students will practice at least 5 days each week, even if just for 10‐15 minutes.
- Students will mark on their weekly assignment sheets the tasks they practiced each day.
- Students will make it a high priority to practice the evening of their lesson or the next day. Practicing within the first 24 hours after a lesson is essential in order to successfully reinforce new material covered in the lesson.
- Parents will be present for at least a portion of the practice time for young students or students in their first year of piano study. The parent will need to read practice instructions, guide the student along, and give appropriate praise and feedback.
